“村正”就是在战国时代经过数代的继承，（有说传了三代的也有说七代的）伊势桑名（三重县）有名刀匠的名字，另一个就也是刀的名字。因为初代是向千手观音祈福而出身的孩子，名字叫做千子。
村正并不仅仅是一般的日本刀，也有小刀或者枪之类的武器。在刀剑的历史上，村正与正宗一样经常被别人列举出来，知名度是相当高的。虽然有初代的村正学了正宗的制作方法这样有趣的说法，正宗是镰仓幕府末期的人物，与初代村正活跃的时代有着很大的差异，虽然这样的说法是不可能的，不过现在开始介绍有关村正与正宗有趣的故事。
以正宗为蓝本一心想做出名刀的村正，对着刀的锋利有着很大的执着，想做出比任何刀都锋利的出来。保持这样的心思他每日修行。但是他的师傅正宗看到了那样的村正，不觉担心起来。之后正宗叫上村正一起将做出来的刀对着河流的上游，正好有一片叶子顺流而下……。正宗将水流分开，叶子避开了正宗的刀锋向下游流去，而村正则正好相反，叶子被刀所吸引，从中间被划为两瓣。
见到这个情景的正宗对村正说「只是能够砍杀的刀并不是真正的刀，只是拘泥与没有必要的锋利的话，就会让邪气付在刀上，就算不需要斩断的东西也会斩断」。但是村正却说了「正是因为能斩断所有东西，这才是刀的精髓，这才是我所追求的东西」后，离开了正宗。

村正被称为带来灾祸的妖刀的传说很多，这是因为与开启江户幕府的德川家有着很深的因缘。
德川家康的祖父松平清康，在与织田信长的合战中被信长家臣阿部弥七郎砍杀的刀与家康的父亲松平广忠被刺杀而家臣岩松八弥使用的肋差，家康的嫡子信康切腹时使用的介错刀，以及在授予织田有乐斋武勋时查看他将敌人杀死的枪的时候，非常不幸的负伤等等，这些武器都是村正。
因为发生了这么多的事情，村正被称为向德川家复仇的妖刀，德川家还发出了严禁佩带村正的命令。这样也影响了民间很多地方，并使老百姓也认为村正是“妖刀”。
即使这样，因为这是把有名的利器，很多人将村正刀铭上的「村」字去掉，把它的刀铭改成正宗或正广而留了下来。并且反对德川的大名却十分推崇这把刀，真田，岛津，锅岛，福岛乡隆盛以及戊辰战争的总司令有栖川宫炽仁亲王也都带着村正。
虽然村正被认为是德川家的仇敌，但是也有少数的极端例子。德川家的三河与村正的伊势的距离很近，德川的三河里流通着许多村正，这一点虽然并不奇怪。但是就算是杀死了清康，刺杀了广忠，处决了信康的都是三河的武士，所以使用村正也是理所当然的。
并且，德川家的功臣本多忠胜所用的名枪「蜻蜓切」的作者藤原正真，只要调查下他的名字，就会发现他与伊势的锻刀师村正的弟弟同名同姓。也就是说他也是属于千子一派。照这么说来「蜻蜓切」也是村正里的一把。更可以说明，村正并不一定会给德川家带来灾祸。

村正有着刀刃上呈现波浪形的流纹，刃的流纹向两刃顶端汇集的特征，不过最大的特征还是它的“锋利”。将华丽的它与美丽的正宗相比的人认为，村正那令人恐惧的刀锋能够晃花人的眼睛。阿部弥七郎将松平清康杀死的时候，据说伤口从右肩一直到了左小腹，如果这是真的话，真的被砍一刀砍为两段了。
还有织田有乐斋的村正枪，能够把穿着铠甲的人刺穿，本多忠胜的「蜻蜓切」据说也能把停在枪尖的蜻蜓切为两半，所以有了蜻蜓切的名字。那一把都是有着普通武器所没有的锋利，并且随着历史的流逝更是增添了更多的传奇色彩，它的锋利也是力冠群雄……。不过不这样的话，就不会有这些强调锋利的小故事了。
村正的外表在今天来看并不出众，虽然有「美丽的东西并不实用，实用的东西并不美丽」的说法，不过有了村正这个观点也不一定正确吧。
